Early Spring in Georgia

Depending on the weather, spring arrives in north Georgia in late March or early April. One of my favorite places to visit this time of year is Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The Callaway family bought the property for use as a personal family retreat and has since opened it to the public. Gardens is not the most apropos name since the property also contains a lake, golf courses, a beautiful chapel, a butterfly house, and a retreat center. The gardens themselves are spectacular especially in spring when the dogwoods and azaleas transform the landscape into a dazzling array of color.
On our way back from Callaway we stopped at Starr’s Mill, a non-working but scenic grist mill near Fayetteville. The recent heavy rains transformed the normal gentle flow of water over the mill-pond dam to a torrent of muddy water. The mill is still picturesque, however, and the fishermen nearby made for an interesting scene.
On our way back to Atlanta, we were able to capture the state capitol in late afternoon sunlight. We scouted for locations to take the city skyline at sunset and settled on the Freedom Parkway site above. With all of Atlanta’s growth, the number of freeway overpasses has grown, but the recent addition of fences eliminates most of them as place from which to capture the skyline. Fortunately, a few are left and the results can be spectacular.
